Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Level I
At this level, basic disability inclusion training content and activities will target inclusion managers who need to conduct inclusion presentations but have had little or no experience conducting disability inclusion training. Using adult learning principles, attendees will learn how to effectively impart knowledge on disability law and legal responsibilities, access, Universal Design, reasonable accommodations, inclusive recruitment strategies and inclusive management and supervision.
This interactive training, via hands-on activities, small and large group discussion, sharing of effective practices and resources, and peer teach-backs will deepen the novice inclusion trainers understanding of disability concepts and will develop their capacity to conduct basic training using the curriculum developed from the Corporation’s handbook: Creating an Inclusive Environment: A Handbook for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in National & Community Service Programs. Please see a copy by linking to: www.serviceandinclusion.org/handbook/index.php.
In order to be eligible to participate in this training, an attendee should be responsible for the management and implementation of inclusion at an organization, program, volunteer agency or Commission. Each attendee will be required to complete an application prior to being enrolled. The following factors will assist you in determining if Level I enhances your capacity as a disability inclusion manager:
- Are you responsible for assessing your program or organization for accessibility and the inclusion of individuals with disabilities?
- Are you responsible for providing disability inclusion training or knowledge and skills transfer to Program Directors, staff, and service sites in your state?
- Are you responsible for addressing requests for reasonable accommodations and overseeing its implementation?
Graduates of Level I or Level II will develop action plans that will outline how acquired skills and knowledge will be applied within their respective state commissions and organizations. Follow up technical assistance will be provided by NSIP following the event to implement these plans.
